A vintage Los Castillo
mixed metals Aztec warrior/Quetzalcoatl deity wall plaque with inlaid stones.
This masterful sculpture depicts an Aztec warrior with copper face shown in
profile, with a stone earring featuring inlaid mixed metals to the two angled pendants.
A curving brass headpiece is designed with an inlaid lapis lazuli nautilus
accent and five Quetzalcoatl-inspired curvilinear feathers inlaid with both
turquoise and lapis lazuli. The sculpture is mounted atop a black-painted
wooden plaque, marked to the lower right corner with the Los Castillo name in
applied brass script. The master silversmiths of Los Castillo, all trained in
William Spratling’s workshop, founded their own Taxco workshop in 1939,
pioneering techniques such as “married metals” or metales casados.
