Hans
Smatlak Barma (1903 – 1978) This is an eye-catching painting of good size, by an artist
demonstrating tremendous skill in the handling of light. The alpenglow
on the distant peaks at sunset (dawn?), the shadowed areas, the areas in
bright sun.....all handled with great control. The most famous painter
of winter mountain landscapes in this style was Lazslo Neogrady, the
works of whom sell regularly at auction in the low thousands of dollars.
Neogrady had some imitators but most lack his skill; Barma seems to be
nearly his equal, at least in this particular work. Barma's works sell
regularly in Europe at the likes of Christie's and other houses. The painting is in excellent condition. It reminds me of witnets here in Sedona. All in all this is a
highly decorative painting which will grace any interior.
