John Soderberg "Poreia"

64"H x 24"W x 20"D

Poreia (po-ray-a), in ancient Athenian Greek, means "the great journey". The bronze sculpture, Poreia, symbolizes humanity struggling upward in a spiritual sense, as symbolized by the tiny human figures making their way up the challenging terrain of the rock spire. Some of the figures show dedication, others disheartenment. Many have reached their goals, and others have chosen the wrong path, a path that apparently does not lead to their destination. One figure reaches down carefully, arm outstretched to aid another. Some contemplate the journey ahead, while others survey how far they've come. The figures reveal that sometimes we make positive choices, sometimes poor ones, and that we are always learning throughout our life's journey.

On the top and backside of the spire is the "destination" symbolized by a village, the spiritual goal to be reached by the human figures. Tiny spheres roll out of the village, and down to the bottom of the rock spire, ending with a human baby, and symbolizing a life cycle of some sort.

The hovering angel atop the rock spire symbolizes a compassionate entity feeling deep empathy for humanity as we struggle upward.

This sculpture is sold out edition of 15.
